NEW CHAIRMAN FOR ROYAL COMMISSION

The Prime Minister's office announced today that Her Majesty The Queen has approved the appointment of Sir Tom Blundell as the next Chairman of the Royal Commission on Environmental Pollution. He is joining the Royal Commission immediately, and will take over from the present Chairman, Sir John Houghton, at the beginning of July.


Additional Information

Sir Tom Blundell, born in 1942, is a distinguished structural biologist and a Fellow of the Royal Society. He is at present Sir William Dunn Professor and Head of the Department of Biochemistry at Cambridge University. He was a member of the Advisory Council on Science and Technology from 1988 to 1990, Director General of the Agricultural and Food Research Council from 1991 to 1994 and Chief Executive of the Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council from 1994 to 1996.

Sir John Houghton CBE FRS, an eminent atmospheric physicist and former Chief Executive of the Meteorological Office, has been Chairman of the Royal Commission since 1992, during which time it has published influential reports on transport and the environment, waste incineration and sustainable use of soil.
