Evidence from the London Borough of Southwark
to the Environmental Planning Study

From: Sylvia Francis-Mullins, Policy Planner, Planning Policy & Research Team, Planning & Regeneration, London Borough of Southwark, Council Offices, Chiltern, Portland Street, London SE17 2ES

Invitation to Submit Evidence on key Theme 1: Environmental Sustainability
London Borough of Southwark Unitary Development Plan (UDP) Review Consultation on the Draft Environmental Appraisal of First Adopted UDP

I have been passed a copy of your letter dated March 27, which was sent to the "Chief Planning Officer".

I enclose a copy of the Draft Environmental Appraisal Report and Technical Appendix on which we are currently seeking the views of the public. These documents can also be viewed on www.southwark.gov.uk if you prefer to access them on the Council's website.

We used a range of environmental criteria and indicators, to assess the impact on the environment of the existing UDP. (The development of social and economic indicators will be part of a subsequent stage in the process of developing the full range of sustainable indicators).

We consulted widely on this draft appraisal in order to enable those interested to comment on the criteria and indicators used, and on the assessments made of the environmental impacts. (I attach a copy of a leaflet which was distributed within the borough e.g. to those on the Council's UDP and Local Agenda mailing lists, to the Residents' and Tenants' Associations and to the community and business organisations. It was also distributed to schools in the borough.)

We feel this was an innovative approach and have had favourable responses from the Government Office for London, the Environment Agency and the Port of London Authority on the approach taken and the way consultation is being carried out.

Please do not hesitate to contact me should you have any queries.
