Comments from the National Farmers' Union of Scotland
on the scoping of the Chemicals Study

From: R Craig Campbell, National Farmers' Union of Scotland, Rural Centre - West Mains, Ingliston, Newbridge, Midlothian EH28 8LT

25 October 2000

Thank your for your letter of 19 October addressed to Mr Rainy Brown, the Union's Chief Executive who has asked that I reply.

It appears that the remit of the intended study is of a technical nature, concerned with the design and production of chemicals, and with the impact of their potential use rather than their method of use.

The agriculture industry as a user of chemicals is heavily regulated. Therefore it appears that the study, insofar as it may be concerned with use of chemicals, should involve regulatory bodies.

The Union does not appear to have a locus in this matter but we would be happy to respond to any enquiries you might have on the impact of regulations in usage of chemicals from a farmers' perspective.
